The Galata tower was constructed by the Genoese in 1384 to serve as the main tower of the Galata city walls. The tower is 61 metres high. In the 16th century it was used as a dungeon and in the 18th century, as a watchtower. It was rebuilt by Mahmut II in 1832 after being destroyed by fire in 1974.
