Generally helmets, which had been used since ancient times to protect
the head of the warrior against the bumps, are one of the most important
pieces of close defence. Along with being a head guard, the helmets were
also used in state and military ceremonies due to striking appearances.
Helmets (Miğfer) are a work of Turkish handicrafts with formation and
ornamentation techniques and differ from examples of other cultures
thanks to these characteristics. Techniques such as forging, cutting,
riveting, moulding, chain weave have been used in manufacturing
helmets, the main material of which is metal. In addition; gold,
silver, mounted gem, embossing, cutting, sanding were among the
ornamentation techniques.
The design of Tolga Sugar Bowl is inspired by a 16th Century helmet
that being exhibited at the Topkapı Palace, a work of art of that time
which is considered to be the most mature period for Turkish helmets.
Tolga Sugar Bowl is produced from handmade glass and all the relief
designs on it are made by hand using 24 carat gilt.
