According to many religious beliefs, the hand form has been considered as a
guard against the evil eye. This form, known as “the Hand of Fatima Ana” in
Islamic culture, is referred to as the Hand of Hamsa in Arabic culture and the
Hand of Hamesh or Miriam in Jewish culture. The shape of hand, the power of
which is increased by writing different prayers on it, is believed to be an effective
talisman against the evil eye.
In Islam, it is believed that the things arousing feelings of liking, envy and
jealousy are attacked by the evil eye. According to this belief, human beings,
animals and even inanimate objects might be attacked by evil eye. For this
reason, some verses and prayers of the Quran are read in order to protect from the
evil eye.
The Alinazar Mirror is designed as a form inspired by the Hand of Fatima
Ana. The verses for the evil eye on the mirror are verse 51 and 52 of Al-Qalam
Surah in the Quran, the most important verses read for protection from the
evil eye. It is written in “Celi Sülüs” style. The meaning of the verses: “And
indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when
they hear the message, and they say, “Indeed, he is mad.”
